"Angels at Christmas Time"

The Cottage House is hosting a new exhibit, "Angels at Christmas Time." Featured is a collection of angel figurines from the private collection of Alvinite, Anita Lee. Included are a variety of angels made from ceramic, wood and other materials ranging in height from 1/4" to 16". Anita began her collection in 1964; most of her angels are gifts from family and friends. The exhibit will be on display through December 16.

The House Museum is open from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays, and the first Saturday of the month. Admission is $3.00. Proceeds are used to maintain the property. For more info., call 281-585-2803.

"Potpourri of Needlework"

The House Museum is hosting a new temporary exhibit, "Potpourri of Needlework." Featured is a collection of needlepoint, smocking, tatting, samplers, crochet, and lace. Included among the items are vintage patterns, antique items, and a yo-yo quilt. The exhibit will be on display through May.

Dolls on Parade Exhibit Closes

The very popular, "Dolls on Parade" exhibit at the Cottage House Museum closed last week. However, the House Museum is open and you are invited to visit our restored, quaint Victorian cottage.

Dolls on Parade

A new exhibit, "Dolls on Parade," has opened at the House Museum. Featured are over 50 dolls from the private collection of Gretchen Copps' sister, Sandra Holland of Houston. Included in the exhibit are character dolls, Shirley Temple dolls, and exquisite handmade dolls by Mrs. Holland.

The House Museum is open from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and the first Saturday of the month. Admission is $3.00.

April 2010 Garden Tour Canceled

The Alvin Garden Club and Alvin Museum Society Board of Directors have decided to cancel the annual Garden Tour for April 2010. Because of Hurricane Ike in 2008, a long summer drought, and recent rains and freezes, the hosts gardens can not be ready this year. But the April 16, 2011, Garden Tour promises to be bigger and better than ever!

Morris Chair Debut

When the Alvin Museum Society took possession of what is now the Marguerite Rogers House Museum at 113 E. Dumble, a dilapidated Morris Chair was found among the items left there. Thanks to the donated services of James Pierce, a restoration Master of antique furniture, and the Alvin Antique Guild for providing fabrice, the chair has now been restored and has a special place in the house museum.

A Morris Chair is an early type of reclining chair. The design was adapted by William Morris' firm from a prototype owned by E. Colman in England. It was first marketed around 1866. Based on what we know about William Morris and John G. Slover, it is reasonable to believe that the museum's Morris Chair is among the earliest ones made.

Come visit the Marguerite Rogers House Musuem and see this beautifully crafted piece of furniture. Tour days are Thursdays and Fridays, and the first Saturday of each month from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Admission $3.00

Cottage Repairs

Repairs and maintenance of The Cottage are still going on. The new fence is completed. Inside repairs due to Hurricane Ike are not finished. The Cottage is still closed for tours, but expects to re-open very soon. We look forward to your visit in the near future.

The Alvin Historical Museum and the museum gift shop are open and we hope you will visit soon. A new temporary exhibit will open this summer. The gift shop has a large selection of items for sale. Visit the other blog pages for more information.

Final Plans for Garden Tour

Final plans are being made for the 10th Annual Alvin Area Garden Tour set for Saturday, April 18. Three private Alvin gardens featured on the tour will be those of Troy and Pam Lewis on Towne Court, Terry and Jody Droege on Towne Court and Joel Trevino and Yvette Melchor on West Larkspur in Hillcrest Village.

Hurricane Ike repairs are being done on the Victorian cottage, so the inside of the house will not be part of the Garden Tour this year. However, the tour will include the cottage grounds and the popular plant sale in the garage of the cottage.

Advance $5.00 tickets are available during business hours at Alvin's Guaranty Bank drive-thru windows, Alvin-Manvel Area Chamber of Commerce, Alvin Historical Museum on Sealy Street and the Marguerite Rogers Cottage House Museum on Dumble Street. Cottage Update

The Cottage House Museum received some damage from Hurricane Ike. The wooden fence was blown down and we have some minor leaks in the roof. Closed during the month of September, The Cottage is open for tours. Although a Fall Exhibit was not planned, The Cottage is a "cozy" place to visit during the holiday season. Plan to come for a visit.

The Cottage is open on Thursdays, Fridays and the first Saturday of the month. We will close Friday, December 19, for the holidays and reopen after the first of the new year. We are working on a Spring Exhibit and will keep you posted.

The Fall exhibit at the Marguerite Rogers House Museum is now opened and waiting for girls of all ages to come see a variety of dolls spanning 100 years. "Teapots & Teacups" Exhibit

"Teapots & Teacups Spring Exhibit" begins Thursday, April 5 through Friday, May 25, 2007 at The Cottage House Museum. There will be a variety of teapots and teacups on display including antiques and collectibles, as well as unique and whimsical ones. Those Bloomin' Myrtles

Oh, those bloomin' myrtles! The crepe myrtles are in full bloom and have been for many weeks. It seems like they bloomed earlier this year. Alvin is blessed to have an abundance of myrtles in our community. They are very popular in our area and thrive in the heat and humidity. Mr. Bass, the second owner of "The Cottage", planted crepe myrtles along his property line and referred to his place as "The Myrtles".

Did you know that crepe myrtles were brought over from Japan in the 1700's? And in 1997, the 75th Texas Legislature designated the crepe myrtle as the official state shrub. See the July 19, 2005 post for photos of last year's blooms.

Spring is here! In celebration of the season, the Marguerite Rogers House Museum is featuring an exhibit of "Bunnies, Bonnets, & Baskets". 7th Annual Area Garden Tour

Plans are underway for the 7th Annual Alvin Area Garden Tour set for Saturday, April 22, 2006. Pot plant donations are needed for the sale. Venders will set up again at the House Museum. Sites on the tour include two yards of homes in the Liverpool area along with a driving tour of parts of CR 192, a stop at the newly opened Camp Mohawk County Park, and the Marguerite Rogers House Museum. Quilt Exhibit

Thanks to Gloria Marquis and those who provided quilts, the holiday quilt exhibit opened to enthusiastic visitors. There are over 15 quilts on display featuring different patterns and a variety of fabrics and colors. Pictured is an exquisite example of "A Trip Around the World" pattern.

The Holiday Exhibit at The Cottage opens Thursday, November 3, 2005. This year's exhibit will feature "Vintage Quilts from 1930's - 1950's." There will be a variety of patterns displayed as used in the homes during that era. Among those for viewing are an "Embroidered ABC Baby Quilt" and a "Trip Around the World Quilt."

Cottage Resumes Tour Schedule

Alvin escaped the wrath of Hurricane Rita last week. We sustained minimal damage and discomfort as a result of the storm. However, much of East Texas was destroyed and people devasted and left without the bare essentials of life. Our thoughts are with all of them as they rebuild their communities and lives.

The Cottage had no structural damage just some shrubery and debris on the grounds from the high winds. Regular tour schedule has resumed.

The Myrtles

After Mr. Slover died in 1923, his widow married Moses J. Bass who lived in The Cottage until 1934 when he moved to San Antonio. When Mr. Bass owned the home, he planted pink crepe myrtle trees along the property line and along what is now Dumble Street. He appropriately named his place "The Myrtles."

Museum Society Quarterly Meeting

The Quarterly Meeting of the Alvin Museum Society is Sunday, May 22, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. in the West Wing of The Alvin Senior Center. The program will be a preview of some of the exhibit artifacts for the Historical Museum. During the business session, the Nominating Committee will present the slate of officers and trustess for the 2005-2007 term. Refreshments will be served. Everyone is encouraged to attend and bring family and frieds. The meeting is open to the public. The Museum Society fiscal year ends May 31. Dues for 2005-2006 are payable beginning June 1.

Spring Garden Tour

The 6th Annual Alvin Garden Tour is set for Saturday, April 16, 2005, from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Proceeds benefit the Marguerite Rogers House Museum, 113 E. Dumble, Alvin, Texas. The event includes a plant sale out of the museum garage. Vendors of items suitable for patios and gardens will set up on the grounds of the museum. Tickets with directions and flyers with maps to the three private, residential gardens will be available. Garden tour tickets are $5.00. 6th Annual Alvin Area Garden Tour

Snow-Covered Cottage

A white Christmas in Alvin. You've got to be kidding! It is true. Snow began falling Christmas Eve and by morning all of Alvin was blanketed by 4-6 inches of snow. It was truly a beautiful sight. No one remembers the last time Alvin had snow on Christmas Day. The Cottage House was picturesque and took on a truly Victorian air.

Calendar Presentation

At the November meeting of the Alvin Museum Society the 2005 Historical Calendar, "Alvin Eateries - Past and Present", was introduced. Calendars were presented to family members of several owners of the resturants featured.
Anna Kettler (r), Chairman of the Historical Calendar Committee, presents a 2005 Calendar to Jan Duke Garb (l), daughter of Frank Duke. Frank Duke owned and operated Red Arrow Cafe from 1937 to 1951.
Anna Kettler presents a 2005 calendar to Anna Esquivel Schnelle, daughter of Nilo Esquivel, Sr. who owned family operated The Mexican Village from April 1948 to November 1993.

More on "Toys of Olde" Exhibit

The "Toys of Olde Exhibit" at The Cottage features toys from 1910 through 1970. There are several "pop-up" books and a Big Little Book plus a wooden jigsaw puzzle all from the 1930's. The faded red 1910 tricycle is in good condition. Also, included are an iron stove with pots and a spelling book from 1908-1915. There's a child's wicker rocker, ca 1929 and a child's metal cabinet, ca 1950 along with many other interesting items. Of special interest is a yellow wooden duck made in 1919 by Hugh Slover.

"Toys of Olde" Exhibit

The "Toys of Olde" exhibit opens December 2, 2004 at the Marguerite Rogers House Museum. The exhibit features a doll house with furnishings hand-made by Marcella Slover Miles, granddaughter of John G. Slover who built The Cottage in 1901. Along with the doll house are a variety of vintage toys.

The exhibit will be on display Thursday, Friday and Saturday, December 2, 3, and 4, and Thursday and Friday, December 9 & 10 and 16 & 17. Hours are 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. The Cottage House Museum is located at 113 East Dumble, Alvin, Texas. Admission is $3.00; children under 12 are free. Alvin Museum Society calendars and other historical collectibles are available for purchase. All proceeds are used to maintain The Cottage and grounds.

Closed Thanksgiving Weekend

Tours of The Cottage will be available on Thursday and Friday, November 18th & 19th. The Cottage will be closed November 24th & 25th for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Christmas at The Cottage House Museum will open Thursday, December 2, with its "Toys of Olde" exhibit. The exhibit will be on display Thursday, December 2, Friday, December 3, and Saturday, December 4 and Thursday and Friday, December 9th, 10th, 16th & 17th. Opening Ceremonies

A part of Alvin's history came to life on Saturday, March 29, 2003, when the Marguerite Rogers House Museum officially opened with ribbon cutting ceremonies. Bill Aulie, chairman of the Steering Committee for Restoration, along with committee members, Pat Klopp, Dwight Rhodes, Paul Doggett, Jean Vance, Jo Wiginton and Karen Pugh, spent many hours and much hard work over 5 years in restoring "the cottage" as it is affectionately called.

On hand for the dedication and opening were the Mayor of Alvin and council Members who were instrumental in allocating funds for the restoration project. Visitors may tour the property on Thursdays and Fridays and the first Saturday of each month from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
